Congregations officially amalgamate

Following votes on Nov. 8, 2009 by both the Queen St. and St. Margaret's congregations which overwhelmingly favoured amalgamation, and the subsequent approval by Kingston presbytery, our two congregations formally amalgamated on January 1, 2010. Although this was the date on which the congregations officially merged, a special worship and inaugural celebration took place on January 31, 2010.

Our next step: Joint Needs Assessment
To assess our staffing needs and to prepare for a new call for ministry personel, United Church policy requires that a Joint Needs Assessment Committee (JNAC) be formed. This committee was approved on Jan. 10 by the congregation and consists of the following:
Elaine Carr
Doris Crawford
Kevin Hansen
Anne Mansfield
Dan Norman
Bob Pike
Laurel Trull
Carol Hopkinson

Make sure you complete the JNAC Survey (see above)!

About your financial contributions
If you currently give to either church by loose offering, the envelopes available in the pews will be designated "Crossroads United", and cheques should be made out to Crossroads United Church. If you give by Pre-authorized remittance (PAR), you do not need to take any further action to switch your givings to the new congregation. Over the next year, the finance committee will be working with the taxation authorities so that tax receipts will be issued in the name of Crossroads, but we cannot predict how long this process will take.

News from the wider church - Your help needed
What would you say if your government:
  • dropped funding for groups like the Sudan Council of Churches, which provide humanitarian support of women and children in war-torn Sudan
  • dropped funding for groups like Heritiers de la Justice, which help support victims of rape in the Congo
  • dropped funding for groups like KONTRAS, fighting for human rights in Indonesia
the real cost of your cellphone: coltan mining in the CongoThe United Church, along with other mainline churches, helps fund KAIROS, Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives, and for 35 years has partnered with CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency), a federal agency, to promote justice initiatives around the world. On Nov. 30, 2009, CIDA anounced that it would drop its contribution to KAIROS, and the local non-governmental partner groups around the world that it supports - effectively crippling, if not terminating the work those groups do.

OUR PURPOSE

Crossroads United Church, as a congregation of the United Church of Canada, is a welcoming and supportive community of Christians that gathers to worship, seeks spiritual growth and humbly works to advance God’s justice in the world.

In a busy, confusing world it's good to know that we do not have to face our challenges alone. At Crossroads, we believe that by deepening our relationship with God and one another we can discover the spiritual resources we need to meet the demands of modern living.

We believe a church should be a community of people who love one another, challenge one another, and support one another as they work together to further God's work in the world. Each week we gather in worship to deepen our relationship with God and discover where God is at work in our lives and world.

Our Worship is a mixture of traditional and contemporary. A senior choir, the incorporation of visual projection technology and the occasional drama presentation enhance the worship experience. Music may be accompanied by the organ, piano, clarinet or percussion. About once a month, our New Sounds group adds guitars to the musical mix. Plus, we occasionally feature new music in the form of original hymns from our "composer-in-residence".
