Is Green in Crossroads' Future? Investigating Solar Panels for our sanctuary roof

The United Church's New Creed says that we are to "live with respect in creation", but our society isn't generally respectful in how we care for the earth. Now Crossroads has the opportunity to reduce its "carbon footprint" through an Ontario Power Authority program that promotes clean energy sources - in our case, by installing photovoltaic solar cells that produce electricity. Some features of the plan are:
  • a 10kW system that generates about $7000 worth of electricity /year
  • carbon dioxide emissions reduced by 7 tonnes /yr if fossil fuels had generated that power
  • 1.7 acres of forest would be needed to soak up that much CO2
  • OPA’s MicroFIT program offers a 20 year contract; the panels are generally guaranteed for 25 years (power could still be sold after the contract expires, but at a lower rate)
  • the church’s use of power is paid for separately (and we pay for the power we use at a much lower rate)
  • materials and installation cost about $75000
  • over 20 years, Crossroads would sell about $130,000 worth of power, so this is practicing both ecological and financial stewardship over the long term

Much of the financing will come from redirecting existing church investments. Look for information meetings coming up in January, 2012 that will provide more information.

New sights at Crossroads:     Queen St. window installed

window recently installedoriginal Hunt painting One of the stained glass windows from the old Queen St. church has now been installed in the narthex (sanctuary entrance) at Crossroads in honour of those in the Crossroads family that have their church roots at Queen St. Based on a painting by British artist William Holman Hunt titled "Light of the World" (and sometimes referred to as "Jesus Knocking at the Door", the original (seen at right) was painted in 1853. The stained glass window (seen at left) is lit from behind by artificial lighting, but it also receives some ambient light from two slender outside windows behind it.

Renovation projects now completed

Over the summer and fall of 2011, several projects have been underway in the sanctuary. All these projects are now completed:
  • the installation of the Kelly (stained-glass) windows from the former Queen St. site
  • replacement of the existing (and drafty) sanctuary windows with more energy-efficient ones
  • an upgrade to the chancel steps (upper area where the communion table is located) to increase safety and to enable the choir to use the steps as risers when they sing
  • and finally, an upgrade of a brighter sanctuary projector, as well as mounting it so that it is out of the way

News from the wider church - Your help needed
What would you say if your government:
  • dropped funding for groups like the Sudan Council of Churches, which provide humanitarian support of women and children in war-torn Sudan
  • dropped funding for groups like Heritiers de la Justice, which help support victims of rape in the Congo
  • dropped funding for groups like KONTRAS, fighting for human rights in Indonesia
the real cost of your cellphone: coltan mining in the CongoThe United Church, along with other mainline churches, helps fund KAIROS, Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives, and for 35 years has partnered with CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency), a federal agency, to promote justice initiatives around the world. On Nov. 30, 2009, CIDA anounced that it would drop its contribution to KAIROS, and the local non-governmental partner groups around the world that it supports - effectively crippling, if not terminating the work those groups do.

Remit material

In the United Church, a remit is a national consultation across the church. A recent remit asks if following three faith documents that the UCCan has produced in the past should become part of the doctrine of the church:
The 1940 Statement of Faith

The 2006 Song of Faith

The New Creed

About the season: Epiphany
When: Epiphany falls 12 days after Christmas (Jan. 6). Yes, there is a song about the 12 Days of Christmas which this. In the church year, these 12 days are actually called the Christmas season. Depending on the tradition, the season of Epiphany either lasts one day, or until the beginning of Lent (Feb 22 in 2012)
About the Date: Epiphany traditionally represents the arrival of the Magi in the Nativity story of Jesus.
Colour: WHITE
Meaning: Epiphany means "to reveal", for the Magi "revealed" to the world that the Christ child was a light to the whole world, and not just a select few. This is a time for the church to focus on community and healing the divisions of bigotry that are often created between God's children.

About our logo
Adopted in 2010, the logo illustrates two crossing roads at the bottom, representing our location at the intersection of two busy roads in Kingston, as well as the way in which our lives and our faith intersect. The rays of the sun illustrate the light that our faith shines on our lives, and the colours (purple and green) are the most common colours of the liturgical year (purple during the 40 days of Lent, and green between Pentecost and Advent).

OUR PURPOSE

Crossroads United Church, as a congregation of the United Church of Canada, is a welcoming and supportive community of Christians that gathers to worship, seeks spiritual growth and humbly works to advance God’s justice in the world.

In a busy, confusing world it's good to know that we do not have to face our challenges alone. At Crossroads, we believe that by deepening our relationship with God and one another we can discover the spiritual resources we need to meet the demands of modern living.

We believe a church should be a community of people who love one another, challenge one another, and support one another as they work together to further God's work in the world. Each week we gather in worship to deepen our relationship with God and discover where God is at work in our lives and world.

Our Worship is a mixture of traditional and contemporary. A senior choir, the incorporation of visual projection technology and the occasional drama presentation enhance the worship experience. Music may be accompanied by the organ, piano, clarinet or percussion. About once a month, our New Sounds group adds guitars to the musical mix. Plus, we occasionally feature new music in the form of original songs for worship from our unofficial "composer-in-residence".

Whatever your age, whether you're single, married, or divorced; whatever your social or economic situation or sexual orientation, whether you or your family have special needs, we invite you to become part of this community in Christ. Come see if Crossroads is the place where you can find a spiritual home.
